The digital loom allows me to work with fine threads in complex weave structures that would be far too difficult and time-consuming to achieve by hand. Instead, I may spend days or weeks developing an image on my computer, specifying the finished size, thread count, colors, and weave structures. Then the digital file is imported into a weaving software program, and after further file preparation, woven samples, and some final adjustments, the weaving instructions are transferred to the electronic loom. The weaver (it need not be me, since every pixel, or thread, has already been specified) throws the shuttle and steps on a foot treadle that advances the loom to the next row to be woven; the digital file tells the loom which threads should be raised or lowered, and the image appears as if by magic.
